Petula Clark

From Now On

- Daryl Easlea

BMG. CD/DL/LP

Pure poignancy from eightysomething icon.

A star now for over 70 years, there has always been tremendous dignity in Petula Clark’s work. From Now On continues where 2013’s Top 30 LP Lost In You left off with its mix of new material (some self-penned, including Pour Être Aimée De Toi, a co-write with Charles Aznavour) and largely wellchosen covers. Now 83, Clark’s voice, always beguiling rather than belting, sounds sweetly vulnerable. Her versions of The Beatles’ Blackbird and Steve Winwood’s While You See A Chance are heartfelt, but the real magic can be found on the electronic pulse of Sacrifice My Heart, which repositions her as a Sarah Cracknell for her generation. Endgame is lovely, too; a tale of wanting to be with your loved one. From Now On is like a favourite family elder comforting you with wisdom and experience.
