Edgar Jones
The Song Of Day And Night
SKELETON KEY. CD/DL/LP Follow-up to 2013’s Morphic Fields by Stairs frontman. Despite a difficult conception – recorded piecemeal over two years in his dilapidated home studio around work with the newly reformed Stairs – The Song Of Day And Night catches Jones AKA Summertyme at his best. Serendipity Doo and Big Eyed Boo draw on the spirit of Allen Toussaint to summon the heat and haze of the gator swamps; Best Thing is a voodoo blues with the trippy spirit of Dr. John; on Thinkin’ Bout The Time, northern and southern states collide as Edgar and his duet partner, Nina Jones, play Lee Dorsey and Betty Harris over a knockoff Motown sound and fuzz guitar. But Jones long ago transcended his influences; here his garbled vocals and booming basslines spearhead his very own Mersey beat.
