Diana Krall
Turn Up The Quiet VERVE. CD/DL/LP
Multiple Grammy winner’s triumphant return to her jazz roots. There have been times, no doubt, when Diana Krall felt restricted by being typecast as a jazz chanteuse, and that’s probably why every so often she likes to do something different, as exemplified by 2004’s The Girl In The Other Room, where she reinvented herself as a singer/songwriter, and more recently on 2015’s MOR pop excursion Wallflower. Despite her ability to surprise her listeners by breaking out of her comfort zone, this new album affirms that jazz is what the 52-yearold Canadian singer/pianist does best. Here, she’s reunited with veteran producer Tommy LiPuma on a collection of jazz standards and the results are spectacular. Blending jaunty swingers with languorous ballads, Krall is on top form. Chief among the highlights is an exquisitely-orchestrated bossa nova rendition of Cole Porter’s Night And Day, delightfully infused by Krall’s sultry eroticism. A classy and elegant piece of work.
