Resistance Radio: The Man In The High Castle

- James McNair

“A musical manifestation” of Amazon’s dystopian TV series. Produced by Danger Mouse and Sam Cohen (Apollo Sunshine; Yellowbirds), this 18-track concept record finds artists such as Sharon Van Etten, Beck and The Shins’ James Mercer luxuriating in covers of illustrious songs from the early 1960s. With The Man In The High Castle imagining a 1962 America ruled by a victorious Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan, the record’s meticulously retro sonics are wholly valid. In the TV show, Resistance Radio is the pirate mouthpiece of US resistance fighters; here it serves to name a diverse collective taking turns at the canon. Beck’s take on Peretti, Creatore and Weiss’s immortal Can’t Help Falling In Love and James Mercer’s version of A Taste Of Honey get right under the skin, but it’s Curtis Harding’s noble sounding Lead Me which brings the goosebumps. Word is that all 18 songs will feature in TMITHC’s next season.
