1 Loudon Wainwright III
History
VIRGIN/CHARISMA 1992, FROM £9 You Say: “Resonates most strongly.” Worth Wagers, MOJO Facebook Written after his father’s death from colon cancer in 1988, this almostconcept LP (recorded with extended family members The Roches, and Kate and Anna McGarrigle) begins with anti-romance hoedown People In Love (“People in love… it makes me sick”) and dissects the debilitating clichés of masculinity in Men (“Every man’s a captain/Men know how to drown”). Raw, truthful songs about childhood and the passage of time (The Picture), parenthood (Hitting You), and loss (Sometimes I Forget) make this his finest work.
