Jane Weaver

PSYCH FOLK POP HYPNOTIST

-

What music are you currently grooving to? A lot of Lebanese and Egyptian music from the ’70s, that’s my thing at the minute. Fairuz and Sabah, and Warda Al-Jazairia, who’s Algerian. I guess because of the Eastern strings, and the predominantly female vocal – the intonation and singing is something I can’t do. I’m in awe of it. The David Axelrod/Electric Prunes LP Release Of An Oath has been a mainstay for the past year, plus Curved Air’s second, Beak>, Exploded View, David Sylvian & Ryuichi Sakamoto, and pop music my kids listen to: Rihanna Melanie Martinez.

What, if push comes to shove, is your all-time favourite album? Kate Bush, The Kick Inside. I was five or six when I saw her on Top Of The Pops, and I got it on cassette for Christmas. That album for me is a musical awakening, the record that made me go, “I want to be a musician and singer, I want to be like her.” It was this cosmic thing! What was the first record you ever bought? And where did you buy it? Run To The Hills by Iron Maiden, from Asda in Hale, near Widnes. I went really heavy, but I also liked indie music.

Which musician, other than yourself, have you ever wanted to be? Catherine Ribeiro. French protest music, quite punk rock, with a lot of Eastern instruments.

What do you sing in the shower? Chandelier by Sia’s a good one.

What is your favourite Saturday night record? I do like the Purple Rain soundtrack – it’s got loads of pop hits. And ’90s R&B – Destiny’s Child and Aaliyah.

And your Sunday morning record? Serge Gainsbourg and Jean-Claude Vannier’s Cannabis, David Axelrod’s Earth Rot or Morricone’s Lizard In A Woman’s Skin. They’re the producers I try and rip off, but it never happens.
