10 Warren Zevon My Ride’s Here ARTEMIS 2001, £9.99
You Say: “Could easily have worked as his sign-off record.” Alan Worth, via e-mail
Although described by Zevon as “my spiritual album”, and part-preoccupied with thoughts of mortality, much of My Ride’s Here suffers from a kitchen-sink production that submerges his weakening voice. Throwaway rockers like Sacrificial Lambs and Carl Hiassen collaboration Basket Case don’t work, while the arrangement of the valedictory title track fails to do justice to one of Zevon’s finest lyrics. But the strings-soaked Dylanesque character assassination of Genius is just that, while You’re A Whole Different Person When You’re Scared (co-written with Hunter S. Thompson) taps into the insecurities and darker motivations of the hard-bitten freelance drunk.
