When Zevon was diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma, and told he only had months left to live, he threw himself into the recording of a farewell album, but also leapt off the wagon, carving out a comfort zone with Scotch whisky and Percocet, and locking out the world. Bruce Springsteen, Billy Bob Thornton, Ry Cooder, Emmylou Harris and other famous friends stopped by to help, and it certainly sounds like everyone’s having a ball, but the best tracks here are the sparest, including death-sentence narrative Prison Grove, and Zevon’s gorgeously sad farewell to his wife and family, Keep Me In Your Heart. Released on August 26, 2003, Zevon died on September 7.
