Recorded in August 1980 during a five-day residency at The Roxy, Stand In The Fire is one of the most exciting live albums ever, and an essential purchase. Rhino’s 2-CD 1997 comp, I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead, sits in the alltime Top 5 of single-artist Best Ofs, while 2007’s Preludes, a collection of rare and unreleased tracks, contains previously unissued gems such as Studebaker, Stop Rainin’ Lord, and The Rosarita Beach Café. However, the one set text here is Crystal Zevon’s oral history of her husband’s life and times, I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead, (Ecco, 2007) a masterpiece of rock biography.
