Stu Larsen

- Glyn Brown

Wistful second album from self-effacing Aussie. Larsen, who grew up shy on a farm in Queensland’s tiny Bowenville, expected to stay put; instead, 2014’s debut, the country-folk Vagabond, detailed his suitcaseliving wanderlust. The guy who didn’t talk as a kid keeps his songs telling but spare, singing them like a gentle blend of Robert Wyatt and The Go-Betweens’ Grant McLennan; tracks are opaque haikus, pared-down snapshots of a time or place, coasting on lush, six-string acoustic. But it’s possible Larsen is finally hankering for roots. In the upbeat, yearning Aeroplanes, he longs for his Spanish girlfriend as he writes in Glasgow; Chicago Song almost doesn’t mind the travel, as long as that “partner in crime” is by his side. There’s a sense that Larsen is squaring up to settling down, and ready for an entirely new journey.
