Dwight Trible with Matthew Halsall
Inspirations GONDWANA. CD/LP
Thrilling Anglo-American spiritual jazz summit. Although his soulfully sonorous bass-baritone voice and cosmic sensibility mark him out as a graduate of the Leon Thomas and Andy Bey school of jazz singing, Cincinnati-born/Los Angelesbased Dwight Trible has nevertheless forged his own distinctive style. Like Thomas before him, Trible honed his craft under the tutelage of spiritual jazz guru Pharoah Sanders, whom he still performs with. Here, Trible joins forces with the noted Manchester trumpeter and Gondwana’s founder, Matthew Halsall, in a collaboration that resulted from their chance meeting at a South African jazz festival back in 2005. Sympathetically accompanied by Halsall’s band, Trible presents a disparate mix of material, putting his unmistakable stamp on songs that range from pop classics to jazz standards and gospel hymnals. His gorgeous re-workings of Burt Bacharach & Hal David’s What The World Needs Now and Donny Hathaway & Leroy Hutson’s Tryin’ Times are stunning.
