David Rawlings

Poor David’s Almanac ACONY. CD/DL/LP

- The Harrow & The Harvest. Sylvie Simmons

Third album from that guy who plays guitar next to Gillian Welch. No more ‘Dave’ or ‘Machine’, here’s David Rawlings, solo. Except there’s a band, a very fine one, many of them on his previous album, Nashville Obsolete (2015) – Punch Brothers’ Paul Kowert, Crooked Still’s Brittany Haas, Ketch Secor of Old Crow Medicine Show, Taylor and Griffin Goldsmith of Dawes, Willie Watson, and of course David’s musical partner, Gillian Welch. Since the wait for a Gillian & David studio album goes on, this is a welcome treat. Most of its 10 original songs are neo-trad: jaunty backporchers (Come On Over My House); clapboard church gospel (Good God A Woman; Put ’Em Up Solid); even hambone (Money Is The Meat In The Coconut). The analogue recording adds even more warmth to David’s tenor. No 11-minute epics this time, but there are two real stand-outs: Neil Young-esque Cumberland Gap,and Airplane, as hypnotic and moving as anything on
