Rubén González

Born in 1919, González helped define the distinctive sound of Cuban piano from the 1940s until retiring in the 1980s. Lured out of retirement for the Buena Vista Social Club session in 1996, despite arthritis and not having owned a piano for a while, González’s joyful, infectious playing retained all its grace and flavour. When that album was done, the tapes kept rolling and the musicians played for another two days to cut a González solo album – only his second, and his first since 1975. González poured all he knew into nimble, sunlit versions of Cuban son, chachacha, boleros danzons, and his own compositions. This expanded 2-LP version drips with so much essence of Cuba you’ll need air conditioning. Jim Irvin
