Two recommended DVDs: best is Live In ’72 (Revolver Entertainment, 2005), Al in his early pomp in front of a New York studio audience for PBS’s Soul! show. An hour of bliss, with How Can You Mend A Broken Heart a showstopper. The noted documentary director Robert Mugge’s The Gospel According To… (see reissue, p114), filmed in ’83, has fine performances and his own words, back in the day, on his decision to swap stage for pulpit. In print, Take Me To The River (Harper, 2000), written with Davin Seay, won’t satisfy soul fans – Green isn’t really keen to wholly engage with his era most of us are interested in.
