Was Gregory Isaacs Jamaica’s greatest singer, as well as its self-appointed Cool Ruler? Plenty on this 40-track trawl through his imperious 1970s recordings argues that case persuasively – see impassioned street-tough tunes such as Mr Cop, Black A Kill Black and Slave Master. Of course, whether a collection lacking his romantic classic Night Nurse can really be called The Best Of… is a moot point, but still – what a voice! AP
