FAT WHITE INSECURE MAN What music are you currently grooving to? ‘Grooving’ isn’t the right word, but I’ve listening to a lot of Dick Gaughan and Nick Drake, lots of Trunk records stuff and the occasional bit of Dutch gabba and hardcore, when I am feeling groovy.

What, if push comes to shove, is your all-time favourite album? Astral Weeks by Van Morrison. It’s been the undisputed champion of my record collection for at least five years. It’s the sound of a small angry man trying to transcend his horrible little body. I’m obsessed with Northern Ireland and he’s part of that. It reigns supreme as Celtic soul. It’s Van the Man. The miserable man.

What was the first record you ever bought? And where did you buy it? The first record bought was a cassette tape by Bryan Adams and Mel C, or B, the sporty one, as a gift for my mother. The first record I remember buying with my own money was a split album between NOFX and Rancid, from the Virgin Megastore.

Which musician, other than yourself, have you ever wanted to be? Many – Sid Vicious, James Brown, John Fahey, Gavin Bryars, Tom Waits, Van Morrison… Anyone but myself!

What do you sing in the shower? I whistle in the shower sometimes.

What is your favourite Saturday night record? Can’t go wrong with Houserockin’ by The Gories, or something by Abba. Mostly these days I listen to a lot of folk. My friend Tim Franklin makes these incredible mixes from his record collection on Mixcloud.

And your Sunday morning record? At the moment it’s Five Leaves Left by Nick Drake. Or I could listen to The Carter Family or some old Greek rebetiko music. Maybe whale song. Or Throbbing Gristle, or Discharge, or Music For Airports by Brian Eno. Depends on the night before. Insecure Men’s Karaoke For One Vol. 1 is out now on Fat Possum.
