★★★★ Harbour Boat Trips Vol. 02 Copenhagen By Trentemøller HFN MUSIC. CD/DL/LP
Danish synth maven takes melancholic voyage.
For over a decade, Anders Trentemøller has stalked the electronic music world with brooding downtempo and slo-burn alt-dancefloor forays. It doesn’t need forensic science to work out his base materials – shoegaze, psych, cold wave and dark electro pop. On his second Harbour Boat Trips outing, the Danish producer cast his net over a sea of drone, deepwater beats and beautiful noise. Away from fairly heavyhitters like Slowdive, A Place To Bury Strangers and the oppressive, contemplative throb of Trentemøller’s take on Neil Young’s Transformer Man, it’s the album’s more obscure choices – usually Danish in origin – that are most compelling. How Do I’s take on Abba’s Knowing Me, Knowing You channels Nico-era Velvet Underground, locking it in sync with the original’s bleak lyrical nature, and Naked When You Come, by ’60s Copenhagen beat combo The Lollipops, is delightfully menacing baroque pop. This wonderfully wintry music has something of the night about it.
