Tribute to LA’s Paisley Underground by those central to it. In 2013, The Bangles, Rain Parade, Dream Syndicate and The Three O’Clock reunited for a show at LA’s Fonda Theatre to raise money for the Education Through Music organisation. An LP was discussed, and then recorded four years later featuring each group covering one song by the other three bands. The renditions stay faithful to the original Paisley Underground sound with ’60s melodies, ringing guitars and rich harmonies, although the bands aren’t afraid to stamp their own identities on the tracks. As such, The Dream Syndicate drench The Bangles’ Hero Takes A Fall in hypnotic drone and Velvets noise; Rain Parade place TDS’s When You Smile in a semiacoustic setting; The Three O’Clock take Tell Me When It’s Over to the middle east with bells and finger cymbals; The Bangles frame That’s What You Always Say with grungy guitars and howling blues harp.
