Vivid snap of DJ Guy Stevens’ Monday night Mod hub. The relaunch of Charly Records’ offshoot Club Soul celebrates with the vinyl reissue of three of their previously CD-only compilations. The Scene Club, The Twisted Wheel Wigan Casino Soul Club and map the UK rare soul scene’s journey from its Mod roots to out-on-the-floor glory days. All are great, but the pick is the first-named, with 16 tracks culled from DJ Guy Stevens’ Monday night sessions at the Ham Yard basement from 1963 to ’66. The hipster jive talk of Dr Horse on Jack, That Cat Was Clean, Ike & Tina’s raw soul shout A Fool In Love, and the new breed R&B of Betty Everett’s I’ve Got A Claim On You shook the floor back then and still sound tough and exciting when spun out today.
