NOW DIG THIS
1969’s Gliding Bird, a hard-tofind glimpse of her precountry phase, contains hints of what was to come. It’s on YouTube. Two albums of duets with Rodney Crowell – 2013’s Old Yellow Moon and 2015’s The Traveling Kind – are more traditional than the best stuff that followed her exit from mainstream country, but full of intimacy and authenticity. Live DVDs are hit-and-miss, though 2006 Mark Knopfler collaboration Real Live Roadrunning is worth a watch, as is the 2016 tribute concert The Life And Songs Of Emmylou Harris. The only biography is Jim Brown’s clunky 2006 effort Angel In Disguise, so start with David N Meyer’s Gram Parsons book Twenty Thousand Roads (2007), then follow the music.
