Skip Marley TUFF GONG BOB’S GRAND-SCION

What music are you currently grooving to?

I’ve been really diving into some Afrobeats – there’s been a lot of that played in the house. The last thing I listened to was Mr Eazi – I think him come from Ghana… no, Nigeria. I love the movement and the feeling in it the spirit, the mixture of new songs with traditional African riddim.

What, if push comes to shove, is your all-time favourite album? Put me on the spot! (thinks) I love all my grandfather’s records, but it’s his Confrontation – especially for Stiff Necked Fools. And Spirit Of Music, by [Ziggy Marley And] The Melody Makers – I grew up on that but it always feels fresh. What was the first record you ever bought? And where did you buy it?

The first record I bought? I don’t know! The first music I really dived into was my grandfather’s and that music always around the house, at Uncle Stephen’s y’know? And everything else you need within reach now, online.

Which musician, other than yourself, have you ever wanted to be? Myself. I never really wanted to be anyone else. But I wouldn’t mind being able to play guitar like Jimi Hendrix, or B.B. King. I’m a fan of all guitar-playing.

What do you sing in the shower?

What do I sing in the shower?! (laughs) Er… whatever I’m working on or whatever’s stuck in my head.

It’s never the same ting.

What is your favourite Saturday night record?

Set Up Shop. Damian Marley. You know that song? Up tempo! Energy! Ting that move you… I can jump to that.

And your Sunday morning record? (Sings) “Easy like Sunday mo-o-orning…” I bet you get that a lot. It does what it says. But I suppose it depends on the Sunday morning. Most times – keep it cool. Something like Natural Mystic [from Exodus] or Easy Skanking [from Kaya] – that’s good for a Sunday morning, too. Catch the vibe, man!

Cherie Currie RUNAWAY, QUEEN OF NOISE

What music are you currently grooving to?

I’m a chainsaw artist and I keep it on classic rock when I’m working. I was carving pretty hard to Guns N’Roses yesterday. And making my new record The Motivator, we listened to a vast pool of music – The Kinks, T.Rex, Lennon.

What, if push comes to shove, is your all-time favourite album? Diamond Dogs by David Bowie. And Goodbye Yellow Brick Road by Elton John. They’re the music of my childhood, when we could feel great about life and be propelled forward and inspired! It was all about dreaming, and dreaming big.

What was the first record you ever bought? And where did you buy it? It was a 45, Don McLean’s American Pie. I was in 5th grade, I got it with my allowance money. It would’ve been either Peaches or Tower Records in Los Angeles.

Which musician, other than yourself, have you ever wanted to be? David Bowie! My very first concert was the Diamond Dogs tour at the Universal Amphitheatre. The greatest concert ever. When I saw him onstage I knew at that moment that this was what I wanted to do.

What do you sing in the shower? Usually whatever song I have to record. And I used to sing All By Myself by the Raspberries – literally, right? As far being able to sing octaves and things like that, it’s the perfect song.

What is your favourite Saturday night record?

David Bowie and Elton John and Alice Cooper and Suzi Quatro! That’s just the way it is – it brings me back to feelgood times and we all need to feel good. For Suzi, that would be Your Mamma Won’t Like Me, Can The Can, 48 Crash…

And your Sunday morning record? Sheesh. Usually it’s just coffee and a little news. I’ll go with The Mamas And The Papas, California Dreamin’ – I love that song! Sounds pretty good, especially on a dreary day like today.

“Sheesh. Just coffee and a little news.” CHERIE CURRIE DIALS IT DOWN ON SUNDAY
