AS KASABIAN’S guitarist and main songwriter, Serge Pizzorno has mastered the art of the densely layered anthem. Without having Tom Meighan’s voice to write for, his first solo outing is a lighter beast altogether and his musical palette has become substantially broader. It’s an eclectic, self-produced selection, full of glee and adventure. Meanwhile… At The Welcome Break is an acoustic strum, while The Youngest Gary is a turbo-charged sizzle, and the sweeping ((Trance)) a cloudburst of delirium. The closing Meanwhile… In The Silent Nowhere and the instrumental opener Meanwhile… In Genova could have been part of the soundtrack to an imaginary chic ’70s espionage thriller, and the outstanding Lockdown showcases Pizzorno’s wistful voice and wicked way with a hook. The S.L.P. might be a one-off, but right here, right now, he sounds liberated.
