Belle And Sebastian
★★★ Days Of The Bagnold Summer OST MATADOR. CD/DL/LP New songs and catalogue re-recordings for new melancholy teenage movie. Back in the 20th century, Belle And Sebastian made naïve, tender music for indie kids’ subtly seedy imaginations. Bolder and poppier since, they revisit their past for this film soundtrack, telling the story of a teenager (played by Earl Cave) forced to spend a long summer with his mum. Three ’90s B&S songs are re-recorded for full melancholia effect: ’96’s Get Me Away From Here, I’m Dying, 1998’s I Know Where The Summer Goes, and real rarity Safety Valve, a shouldershrugging slice of sweetness predating their first album,
Tigermilk. The best new tracks’ confidence boosts the band’s emotional clout, especially in the Jolene-style guitars on Did The Day Go Just Like You Wanted? and the reverb-laden early-’60s atmospheres of Wait And See What The Day Holds. That old, bashful band work just as well widescreen. Jude Rogers
