Supergrass

The Strange Ones:1994-2008 BMG. CD/LP

- James McNair

EXTENSIVE new essays on each of their LPs; all six of Supergrass’s studio albums on vinyl picture-disc; 13 CDs, including seven crammed with live shows, outtakes, acoustic versions, demos and rarities – money and time has been spent on this all-encompassing box. Timed to mark both the 25th anniversary of Supergrass’s debut I Should Coco and the band’s return to the live stage, it also includes 7-inch single Caught By The Fuzz/Richard III 2020 remix, a 52-page book, four colour posters and eight button badges. Lovely that the ’Grass’s zestful cover of The Police’s Next To You packs something of Jimi Hendrix’s Fire, and giggly stoner B-side Sometimes We’re Very Sad is great. It’s galling that a band so palpably dripping with ideas until their 2010 split has said that their current reunion won’t spawn new material, but these 215 tracks should keep you going in the meantime.
