I promise that one day, everything’s going to be better for you

Your end of year issue [MOJO 314] usually provides a wonderful overview of the year’s best music. But I was appalled when I discovered MOJO had omitted Peter Perrett’s Humanworld from its best 75 albums of 2019 – that is a fucking disgrace. It is a superb album of densely melodic rock’n’roll, beautifully produced and performed by his sons and their friends. The album attracted strong reviews, including in MOJO, and was widely regarded as superior to his much-heralded comeback album of 2017.

That album rated highly in your best of list that year. That the new album rates no mention at all is indefensible. I am Australian and I think Amyl & The Sniffers and King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard are strong, intense acts creating challenging music. But the notion that their albums are far better than Peter Perrett’s is ludicrous and blatantly ageist.

Humanworld will barrel through your disregard to take its modest place in the rock’n’roll pantheon.

…Looking at the MOJO Review Of The Year, I have eight of the Top 75 albums of the year and one of the 20 best reissues, and I’ve bought a ton of records and CDs this year. Just listened to Michael Rother and bought the Arvo Pärt CD on his recommendation, and am now listening to the Damien Jurado album at number five in the Americana best-of.

…Can’t argue with much of your 2019 Top 10 but I feel there’s one huge omission. I must admit I’ve largely ignored him for the past 35 years, but Lloyd Cole’s album is a transcendent wonder which nobody seemed to notice. Very reflective, full of enigmatic songs and fantastic electronics, and hardly a guitar in sight. Honestly, it’s terrific.
