“She’s A Real Songwriter, A REAL PERSON”
The Heartbreakers’ Benmont Tench on his instant bond with Margo Price.
“I GOT A call to come down and play for a day at EastWest, where we cut some stuff for [Tom Petty albums] Wildflowers and The Last DJ. My friends James Gadson and Matt Sweeney were on the dates, too, so I was really happy to.
I didn’t know Margo, but I kept hearing about Margo. She had such a sterling reputation – a real songwriter, a real person. That counts for me: I like working with people who are just normal. Margo and Jeremy were also expecting, and my daughter, my first kid, was one. We bonded. I was just so exhausted and happy. They looked happy, too, but maybe they weren’t as exhausted. It made me even happier to be around them.
The songs struck me immediately in the studio, so it didn’t take us long to wind ourselves around them. They got people who understand songs, and Margo had the songs. That makes it a pleasure. I love the way she sings, and I like her. I guess that’s a hole-in-one, but I’m not a sports guy.”
