Varied, deep 1972 session from Oakland’s Black Jazz label, led by Masekela/Shepp/ Basie bassist Franklin. Frantic opener Outbreak merits the electric Miles comparisons, but generally this is a more accessible set of funky postbop players working towards new frontiers. JM
