Donovan’s top Trip

-

SEPTEMBER 3

Donovan’s Sunshine Superman is Number 1 in the US. The disc, featuring Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones, is backed with The Trip. Though Donovan later explained the song as a love letter to his future wife Linda Lawrence, he told MOJO, “sunshine is a nickname for acid. The Superman is the person capable of entering higher states because it’s not easy to go into the fourth dimension and see the matrix of the universe.” The two songs’ references to blown minds and being tripped out mark a conspicuous mainstream pop airing for the LSD experience. Due to contractual difficulties, the British issue of Sunshine Superman is delayed but finally hits UK Number 2 in January 1967.
