Punk rock was the spur for Nissen to dive into photography, rather than vice versa. “Steve and I had read about the English bands in London – The Damned and Sex Pistols and everybody. So we went out and bought all the singles, and then we found out about these little clubs in LA. There was punk rock in LA? We were both in the arts, so we just said, Why don’t we do a magazine? It started out as an art project, really.”
