6 Bertha 5:53
A second highlight of the Europe ’72 jaunt, from night four in Copenhagen, and another Dead classic that didn’t ever surface in the studio. Besides being a critical part of their gigs for a quarter century, Bertha also fed into a significant piece of the band’s iconography. The familiar skeleton, wearing a crown of roses, by designers Stanley Mouse and Alton Kelley, eventually became known as Bertha – you can admire her on this month’s CD.
