The Bertha skeleton also manifested on the cover of 1971’s eponymous live set, often referred to by fans as Skull & Roses or the band’s own working title, Skullfuck. The chiming elegy of Wharf Rat, a tale of a homeless wanderer called August West, made its debut on there, too. A decade later, alcohol and drugfree Deadheads – many of them recovered addicts – would convene at gigs under the banner of the Wharf Rats.
