George Porter Jr.

HERE COMES THE METERMAN

-

What music are you currently grooving to?

Over 30 new songs by my bands George Porter Jr. & Runnin’ Pardners and George Porter Trio, just recorded. I try not to listen to music when I am working on solo projects as I don't want to get caught up in somebody else's groove.

What, if push comes to shove, is your all-time favourite album?

I am very vested in New Orleans artists like Earl King, but I think I have to say Curtis Mayfield's New World Order.

What was the first record you ever bought? And where did you buy it? Blood, Sweat & Tears. But I have no idea where I actually bought that album.

Which musician, other than yourself, have you ever wanted to be? Living in New Orleans you quickly learn the value of being yourself musically, so I never wanted to be like someone else.

What do you sing in the shower?

I don't.

What is your favourite Saturday night record?

There's not many Saturday nights when I am not on a gig, and when I'm off I look at the TV, and do not go near music. I like looking at stuff blowing up and the music in those programmes is usually horrible.

And your Sunday morning record? (Smiling) I don't see many Sunday mornings these days. If I don't have to be anywhere I stay in bed 'til late afternoon, resting, and again it's TV time to spend time recharging from music. If I have a gig coming up that I have to learn music for, Sundays are usually a good time to check that music out.

George Porter Jr. plays alongside Eddie Roberts, Nikki Glaspie and Robert Walter on the Flóki Sessions, out this summer on Color Red.

“Living in New Orleans you quickly learn the value of being yourself.” GEORGE PORTER JR.
