How to mak e… A PATCHWORK CAMERA BAG
0.25m ( ¼ yrd) cotton fabric in grey print, 25cm ( 9"), light blue print, 25cm ( 9"), navy blue print 25cm ( 9"), orange print, 12.5cm ( 5") and multicoloured print, 12.5cm ( 5") ( Please note: all fabrics are 112cm ( 44– 45") wide) Medium- weight fusible interfacing, 60 x 13cm ( 24 x 5") One packet of iron- on vinyl Zip, at least 29cm ( 11 ½ ") Two metal hinge close clasps for the strap Sewing thread Teflon presser foot attachment for sewing machine
16 x 9.5cm ( approx. 6 ½ x 4") This stylish little bag is a simple way to travel light on a day out. With its generous shoulder strap, you can go hands- free – it’s just the right size for carrying a camera along with your phone, and it also has a small inner pocket to keep your debit card safe. Best of all, the fabrics have been waterproofed with iron- on vinyl for all- weather protection. Seams are 0.5cm ( ¼ ") unless otherwise stated.
Cut the fabrics for the patchwork. The front of the camera bag is formed from bands of Seminole diamonds. Cut the following strips from your fabrics, working across the full fabric width: one strip of light blue print fabric, 3.8cm ( 1 ½ "), one strip of navy blue print fabric, 3.8cm ( 1 ½ "), one strip of light orange print fabric, 3.8cm ( 1 ½ "), one strip of grey print fabric, 3.8cm ( 1 ½ ") and one strip of grey print fabric, 7.5cm ( 3").
Take each strip and trim into 18cm ( 7") lengths. Set aside the narrow grey lengths.
You’ll need to piece the fabric lengths together, working along the long edges ( 18cm/ 7") to make two joined fabric bands. From this, strips will be cut and rejoined.
Join a wide grey strip to a light blue strip, then add a light orange strip, a navy blue strip and finish with a wide grey strip. Press. Working on a cutting mat, use a quilter’s ruler and rotary cutter to trim the right- hand edge of the joined fabric band to even out the edges, then cut four strips from it measuring 3.8cm ( 1 ½ ") wide.
Then join a wide grey fabric strip to a light blue fabric strip, then add a light orange strip, a light blue strip and finish with a wide grey strip. Press and trim as before, then cut just one 3.8cm ( 1 ½ ") wide strip from it for the centre of the diamond band
Referring to the photo, lay out the joined strips to make the patchwork, matching seams neatly and adding the set aside narrow grey strips to the far left- and far right- hand sides. Stitch the strips together and press.
Lining the centre of the orange diamond up on the cutting mat grid, trim to 17 x 10.5cm ( 6 ¾ x 41/ 8"). Set the finished panel aside.
Cut the fabric for the remainder of the outer bag as follows: from the grey print fabric you’ll need two 3.2 x 5.5cm ( 1 ¼ x 2") pieces for the side tabs, one 17 x 10.5cm ( 6 ¾ x 41/ 8") piece for the back panel and two 2.5 x 29cm ( 1 x 11 ½ ") pieces for the top side panels. From the multicoloured fabric, cut one 5.3 x 26cm ( 2 x 10 ¼ ") piece for the base side panel. Then from the fusible vinyl, cut two 17 x 10.5cm ( 6 ¾ x 41/ 8") pieces for the back and front ( patchwork) panels, two 2.5 x 29cm ( 1 x 11 ½ ") pieces for the top side panels and one 5.3 x 26cm ( 2 x 10 ¼ ") piece for the base side panel. Following the manufacturer’s instructions, add your vinyl to all of the outer pieces, including the set aside diamond patchwork panel.
Now cut the fabric pieces for the bag lining, which are not vinylbacked: from the light blue fabric, cut two 17 x 10.5cm ( 6 ¾ x 41/ 8") pieces for lining back and front, two 2.5 x 29cm ( 1 x 11 ½ ") pieces for lining top side panels, and one 5.3 x 26cm ( 2 x 10 ¼ ") piece for lining base side panel. From the navy blue fabric cut one 17 x 9cm ( 6 ¾ x 3 ½ ") piece for the inner pocket.
Now we’ll prepare the side panel. Trim your zip by measuring and marking 29cm ( 11 ½ ") from the opening end, stitching across the teeth to secure, and trimming the excess. Sew each top side panel
