One Year On at New Designers
EVENT FOCUS Emily Clark reports on the exciting new names being showcased at this annual extravaganza of emerging creative talent
If you fancy taking a peek at the bubbling creativity of the UK’s most accomplished young designer-makers, head down to the New Designers Fair. Taking place at London's Business Design Centre between 24-27 June and 1-4 July, it showcases 3,000 talented new names. And our favourite spot is the One Year On destination, featuring 60 business-minded designers in their first year of work.
All participants are selected based on the excellent quality of their collections as well as their entrepreneurial flair. The show focuses on original, contemporary and innovative products that are tipped to become iconic designs of the future. This year's varied selection includes combinations of new technologies and heritage techniques that fulfil a parameter of being unique. The creative disciplines on display range from jewellery, precious metalwork and ceramics to fashion and textiles, furniture, lighting and illustration.
Everything at the show is available to purchase or commission, making it a valuable opportunity for new designers to garner support and propel their businesses to the next level. "It was the enthusiastic response to my own work at New Designers that encouraged me to establish my own business," explains this year’s curator, Rheanna Lingham, jewellery designer and co-owner of independent boutique Luna & Curious ( www.lunaandcurious.com).
For fashion and design scouts, the show is a place to hunt for the next Orla Kiely or Jasper Conran. But for the average craftilyminded person, it’s a place to be inspired by a wealth of diverse creativity. The brave new world of design is open for business! www.newdesigners.com
