This playful cover-up by technical editor Valerie Bracegirdle features a flower granny square that you can re-use in plenty of other projects (we’re keen to crochet up a tote!).

The top is made first from 16 motifs which are joined as you go into a rectangle 8 motifs wide by 2 deep. The bodice is then made upwards from this rectangle using a V stitch. After a few rows it is split to make the left front, then the back and finally the right front. The top is joined at the shoulders and a cord added for tying.

Square motif pattern

The motif pattern is written as well as charted. For size small/ medium make the motifs up to and including the 6th round. For medium/large size make the motifs up to and including the 7th round. Rounds 1 to 6 of the motif are also charted.

The motifs are made of 3 colours – Rounds 1 to 3 in A, B or C, Round 4 in a second colour chosen from A, B and C, and the remaining rounds in MC. Occasionally you may wish to make the motifs using all colours, in which case Round 1 is first colour, Rounds 2 and 3 in second colour, Round 4 in 3rd colour and the rest in MC.

Make 16 motifs and join as you go. You can follow the colour scheme in the diagram or choose your own colour scheme. Foundation Using first colour, ch5 and join into a ring with a ss.
