Approx. 90 x 94cm (35 x 37") If you hit on anything even remotely resembling one of these crochet beauties in a charity shop, you know you’ve struck gold. We’re not leaving it to chance, though – we’re taking matters into our own hands and hooking up a handmade blanket that’ll stand the test of time.
The fresh colour palette sets this crochet project apart from its vintage sisters – we got our yarn from our pals at Wool Warehouse ( www.woolwarehouse.co.uk), but you could also use your own stash.
The blanket is made up of 39 motifs in nine colour combinations. Begin by completing Rounds 1-4 of each motif following the colour scheme in the chart on page 90. The motifs are then joined on Round 5 following the layout. Finally, a border is added around the edge.
Make 39 motifs up to the end of Round 4 using the colour scheme given in the chart on page 90 Round 1 make a magic ring, ch2 (does not count as a st here and throughout), 12tr into the ring, ss into 1st tr to join, pull ring tight [12tr] Round 2 ch2, (3-tr cluster, ch1) 12 times, ss into 1st 3-tr cluster to join, break yarn and fasten off [12 3-tr clusters] Round 3 join new yarn with a ss into a 1ch-sp, ch2, 4tr into each 1ch-sp around, ss into 1st tr to join [48 tr] Round 4 ch2, (tr4tog, ch4) 12 times, ss into 1st tr to join, break yarn, fasten off and sew in ends [12 tr4tog and 12 4ch-sps]
Once you’ve completed all 39 motifs, use the main image as a layout guide. Starting at the top right (Motif A), work Round 5 which will also join all the motifs Round 5 using Yarn B throughout, for the first motif join yarn in any 4ch-sp, ch2, (1tr, 5htr) in first 4ch-sp, *(5htr, 1tr) in next 4ch-sp, ch3, (1tr, 5htr) in next 4ch-sp; rep from * 4 times, (5htr, 1tr) in next
4ch-sp, ch3, join in 1st tr of round [72 sts and 6 3ch-sps] For the second and subsequent motifs, work Round 5 in the same way but replace the ch3 with joins as indicated in the following steps, referring to the images For the next motif, in place of the 4th and 5th ch3 of Round 5, make a single join to the previous motif as follows: ch4, ss into the point (a 3ch-sp) of hexagon to be joined, 3ss along the first 3 ch from hook Rep to join the remaining motifs of Row 1 layout in the same way. Start the next row by joining the next motif below the 1st and 2nd motifs of the previous row making a single join at the 2nd ch3, a double join in place of the 3rd ch3 as follows; ch4, ss into next point to be joined, 3ss along the first 3 ch from hook, ch3, ss into next point to be joined, 3ss along the 3 ch; followed by a single join in place of the 4th ch3 To join the next motif to the side of the previous motif and to the 2 motifs above make a single join in place of the 2nd ch3, a double join in place of the 3rd and 4th ch3 and a single join in place of the 5th ch3 Rep to join the remaining motifs in this row Start the next row, joining the next motif to the lower left edge of the 1st motif of the previous row and making a single join in place of the 2nd and 3rd ch3 Complete the next 4 motifs of this row as per the previous row. Join the last motif of this row making a single join in place of the 3rd ch3, a double join in place of the 4th ch3 and a single join in place of the 5th ch3 Continue in this way, using the images as a guide, until all 39 motifs have been joined.
To edge the blanket, join Yarn B in any 3ch-sp of the outer edge, ch2, work htr around the blanket, working 3htr in each 3ch-sp, 1htr in each st and 3htr around the 3ss of each single join, ss into 1st htr of round to join [750 htr] Weave in ends and steam the blanket on the wrong side.
