- By Jack Benyon

With the support of M-sport, Harper Adams University will run a car in the Junior British Rally Championship in 2017.

The team will run a Fiesta R2 National car. Automotive Engineering student James Mcdiarmid, 21, will drive the car having driven on single venue events and finished the Mull Rally in four consecutive years as a co-driver. Max Haines-messenger, also 21, will co-drive. Both gained experience servicing for Autotek and CA1 in the BRC last year.

M-sport client liaison manager Rich Millener said: “Those guys came to me two years ago and wanted to get into motorsport. Last year they came to us and told us about making their own rally car, which they built themselves, and how they had got the sponsors.

“They presented to Malcolm and he said ‘you don’t see that enthusiasm and drive to do stuff anymore’, he was almost crying he was so impressed. Malcolm agreed we’d provide them with a kit and a car, they’d build it and pay to run it and we’ll take it back at the end of the year.”

Haines-messenger added: “We are very thankful to the entire M-sport team. The support, time and trust that they have invested in us has been invaluable. Thanks to their generosity, we have spent the past year developing a wealth of knowledge and experience that will see us face this new challenge head on.”
