Cowan brings forward upgrades to fight for class win

-

Newly-crowned Scottish Junior Rally champion Niall Cowan Junior has brought forward upgrades to his MG ZR for Wales Rally GB.

Cowan earned the crown on the Galloway Hills Rally last month when Alasdair Currie didn’t finish. He admitted the title was a surprise and with it the chance to do the National section of WRGB as a prize.

The Scot had intended to update his near-standard ZR over the winter, but sped-up his updates.

“I’d never thought I’d win it,” said Cowan, co-driven by Thomas Bruce. “I’ve certainly wanted to rally on the Welsh stages. You see them on the telly and they look awesome. It’s a once in a lifetime thing and I just have to go and do my best. We’d planned the upgrades for the winter.”

Cowan has tested the car at his sponsor and Scottish Rally champion Jock Armstrong’s quarry, with the updates complete.

“We’d like to get some miles under our belt and if I can win the class I’d be more than chuffed,” he added. “To get through the 85 stage miles is a test.”

Rob Evett will provide stern Class B1 competition in his ZR.
