Ferreday gets back on the stages in VW Beetle with more than 60 years of history
Six months after it rolled out of the Severn Valley Rally, the venerable VW Beetle of Mark Ferreday was back on Wales Rally GB National to record a finish in 56th spot.
The 1953 Beetle is understood to be one of the oldest cars active in UK historic stage rallying and has a rally history that dates back to the 1954 Tulip Rally. It runs a rare Wolfgang Denzel period development of the Beetle engine. “We’ve not been out since the roll,” said Blackpool-based Ferreday. “The panels just popped out and it has a few battle scars.” Ferreday’s business commitments have kept the car away from the stages since April and WRGB is a tough event for the 65-year-old car. “It’s sump surfing and we’ve lifted the back end since last year,” said Ferreday.
He wants to contest the Midnight Sun Rally in Sweden next year.
