7 GILES BUTTERFIELD
GROUP OPERATIONS AND ENGINEERING MANAGER OF MSV
How different things might have been for Formula Palmer Audi had Giles Butterfield not been called in as team manager shortly before the series launched. In the words of Jonathan Palmer he joined “with just eight weeks to do eight months’ work”.
Since then Butterfield has become Palmer’s right-hand man at Motorsport Vision.
After hanging up his racing helmet, the 1980s British Formula 3 driver came to prominence with the Renault British Touring Car Championship team, acting as its technical director in 1993 and ’94.
It was in 1998, though, that Palmer hired him for FPA before he joined MSV when it was created in 2004, where he has since become group operations and engineering manager.
In 13 years he’s seen and done it all, ensuring that Brands Hatch, Snetterton, Oulton Park and Cadwell Park flourished when they were acquired in ’04, and more recently Donington Park last year. He’s also successfully overseen Msv-run series including FIA Formula Two, BRDC Formula 4 and currently BRDC British Formula 3.
