ITRC champions Kelly and Boyle plot full-time entries
Irish Tarmac Rally champions Donagh Kelly and Declan Boyle are planning to enter next year’s series in R5 cars, having not competed full-time in the category since 2015.
This season, they campaigned their respective Ford Focus WRC07 and Ford Fiesta RS WRC with Kelly winning the West Cork Rally for a fifth successive year.
Both decided not to compete full-time in the ITRC when it made R5 the top pointsscoring formula for the 2016 season, with WRCS relegated to fighting for a cup and event wins, not the overall series.
Neither driver has revealed what R5 car they will drive, and Kelly said: “You will all have to wait until Galway to find out. My main problem is time, work is just crazy busy.
“If I will do West Cork [second round] it will be in the R5 car, it just wouldn’t be fair [to turn up in the World Car].”
Kelly did drive an R5 car – a Fiesta – on the Grizedale Rally in 2016, but retired after visiting a ditch while running inside the top five.
The Irish series is set to start in Galway for the International Rally on February 10, a one-day event instead of the usual two. It didn’t run in 2018 for financial reasons.
