WALES RALLY GB CLERK OF THE COURSE, BR C MANAGER
The man’s rise is simply remarkable. Wales Rally GB clerk of the course, British Rally Championship manager, working in the consultation group to help Scotland pass vital closedroad legislation. When you add it all together, Iain Campbell has become a big fish in national motorsport, very quickly.
Having competed as a co-driver and driver, Campbell is acutely aware of what rally folk are like and what they are looking for.
That, combined with pragmatism, charisma and an ability to analyse a situation has contributed to his seamless transition into a key player.
That has seen his quick rise, from clerk of the course of the Snowman Rally in 2002, to deputy of Wales Rally GB in 2005, to assistant clerk of the Jordan Rally in 2010. There isn’t much he hasn’t seen.
His stewardship of Wales Rally GB has been impeccable, and the only mark on the copy book is the British Rally Championship. But the stumbling blocks there relate back to the sport more than Campbell, and hopes are high for more entries next year after a brilliantly put-together calendar was unveiled.
Having attended his first stage on the Mull Rally at six months, ‘Skunner’ as he is known is still a rally fan at heart, and always puts the sport before himself.
