World governing body the FIA and its boss Jean Todt were recognised for their impact in improving safety in F1 with the introduction of the halo device, which has now spread throughout motorsport.
Frenchman Todt was a strong advocate of the new device and it was introduced in grand prix racing and also in F2, and it is due to be rolled out in other categories too such as F3 and Formula E.
Todt said: “We saw the loss of Henry Surtees [in an Formula 2 accident in 2009] because of one wheel hitting his head.
“It is worth fighting the resistance to save a life. I want to thank all the people who have been participating in the research and the teams.”
