9 NEW ROUND IRELAND SPEED RECORD
Powerboat racers Marc Lyne and Dean Watson have broken the Round Ireland speed record for boats under 30ft. The pair set a new time of 18 hours and 12 minutes beating the previous record by 25 minutes. They used a production Scorpion 8.5m RIB fitted with a Yanmar 315hp inboard sterndrive diesel engine.
The duo previously used the same boat to set a speed record around Anglesey in 2015. For this challenge the boat was lightened by removing items such as the A-frame and swapping lead acid batteries for smaller, lighter lithium-ion ones. The weight saved was used to add an extra 400 litres of fuel (double the usual capacity) without affecting the boat’s 50 knot top speed.
