5 life cord nominated for award
The kill cord with a built-in alarm that MBY helped develop has been nominated for one of the marine industry’s most prestigious awards. Lifecord is one of only four products shortlisted for the Lifesaving and Safety Equipment category of the 2018 Dame Design Awards, out of a total of 127 entries across all seven categories.
The Dame awards have been running for 28 years and are widely recognised as the most significant marine equipment competition in the world. They are judged by a panel of naval architects, product designers and journalists.
Lifecord is the brainchild of MBY reader John Barker, who came to the magazine with his idea after being inspired by the campaign we ran to design a better kill cord in 2013. Like us, he was horrified by the death of two people in Padstow when an experienced and safety-conscious boat owner forgot to ensure his wife was clipped onto the kill cord after taking the helm.
Lifecord uses a simple but effective magnetic sensor to recognise when it is not being worn and alerts the driver with the aid of both an audible and visual alarm. Crucially, it fits all makes, models and age of boat already fitted with a kill switch and costs just £89.95.
“The entry field was once again strong and showed further signs of progress at individual company and industry level,” says Birgit Schnaase, DAME jury chair. “The primary motive of the DAME Awards is to encourage good design practice in every aspect, and I was personally pleased to see so many examples where form and function were well balanced.”
The winners will be announced on the opening day of the METSTRADE exhibition, which runs from 13-15 November at the RAI Convention Centre in Amsterdam.
