We found the interior of last year’s S7 a little too masculine with its black and white colour scheme, angular lines and preponderance of stainless steel highlights. The new S6 with its Francesco Guida interior feels just as modern but calmer, softer and more welcoming. Even the galley return is gently curved and appears to float a few inches off the floor while the overhead lockers match the shape and are suspended from the ceiling on elegant extruded aluminium brackets.
A huge glass sunroof overhead, combined with those big diamond-shaped windows, let plenty of light into the saloon while the twin raised helm seats enjoy panoramic views. A central companionway leads down to the lower accommodation, comprising the midships master suite and two further guest cabins.
The bed in the master suite is offset at an angle from the starboard aft corner. It’s quirky but frees up floor space around the foot of the bed and leaves room for a mini dinette or vanity table under the window as well as a full-height wardrobe. The forward VIP suite is beamier than most but a little shorter due to the crew cabin tucked in the bow. It also has to share its ensuite bathroom with the twin guest cabin to port. Stefano Righini’s exterior is as striking as ever, although the trademark trapezoid bow is not the novelty it once was. The superstructure, bathing platform and much of the deck is made from carbon fibre to reduce weight and maximise fuel efficiency. Triple IPS drives are claimed to give a smoother, quieter, more fuel-efficient ride than a pair of bigger shaftdrive diesels while still delivering an impressive top speed of 35 knots and 0-16 knots in under six seconds. They also make room for a tender garage, which leaves the bathing platform clear.
