Inland from Ålesund are the snow-covered Sunnmøre Alps, as seen here. For the three nights we stayed at Øye we were generally alone on the pontoon, apart from the oystercatchers who tapped on the cabin window before dawn. Less than half a mile away is the famous Hotel Union, which offers fabulous meals. We attempted to reach a hut on the lower slopes called the Patchellhytta, but the 30° heat and near vertical ascent defeated us this time! From Ålesund many tourists head to Geirangerfjord, whereas waters less travelled often reveal peaceful hidden treasures.
