3 SUNSEEKER ‘FOILING’ SUPERYACHT
Sunseeker has revealed details of the revolutionary new hull vane system fitted to its forthcoming 161 Yacht. Positioned below the stern of the vessel, it is a fixed wing rather than a true foil. It’s primary aim is to reduce fuel consumption and improve sea-keeping.
It works by creating forward thrust from the upward flow of water under the aft sections of the yacht. This is said to result in a reduced stern wave, lower hull resistance and increased stability at speed. The combined effect of the hull vane and the Fast Displacement Hull Form is claimed to reduce fuel consumption by up to 30%.
The 161 Yacht is the largest vessel to bear the Sunseeker name and the first to be constructed out of aluminium. It is being built in partnership with the Dutch superyacht yard ICON Yachts, using an ultra efficient
Fast Displacement Hull Form (FDHF) rather than the planing hull shapes that Sunseeker’s GRP boats usually use.
While the top speed is still a creditable 22 knots, the real benefit of the FDHF is greater efficiency and cruising comfort across the entire speed spectrum. The first 161 hull is due to launch in late 2021.
