At just under 30ft with a beamy 9ft 9in girth, the Bavaria Sport 29 offers an excellent blend of generous onboard space within compact, manageable dimensions. Styled by BMW’S Designworksusa studio, this is a really smart looking boat too. With its low profile deck, grey hull striping and forward sloping radar arch it has a distinctive, modern, sporty look.
INTERIOR The layout is entirely sportscruiser conventional, with a large u-shaped dinette forward converting to a double berth, and a heads opposite the galley. But the mid cabin is a particularly generous size with
standing headroom in the lobby area, a settee, a small hanging locker and a double berth that runs beneath the cockpit.
EXTERIOR Not only does the Sport 29 have decent side decks, crucially the deck rails extend all the way to the cockpit, very reassuring for those new to boating. A sunpad robs some cockpit space but the payback, apart from a great place to lie and
watch the world go by when at anchor, is a huge ‘boot’ concealed beneath it, giving far more deck storage than you’d normally find on this kind of boat.
PERFORMANCE The base engine was a Volvo Penta 5.7GXI 320hp petrol V8, or you could have a pair of 4.3 V6 petrol engines but at this size the far more economical diesel motors make more sense. Twin Volvo Penta D3 160 or 220
engines were a rare option, most buyers plumped for the single D4 at 260hp initially, and later the D4-300 when it came on stream for a low 30 knots top end.
SEAKEEPING Motor Boats Monthly tested one of the very first and concluded that ‘it must be one of the best sub-30ft cruiser hulls we’ve tested’. They were utterly gobsmacked by how this tubby looking hull dealt with the kind of seas sub-30ft boats don’t usually venture out in to. It was very smooth, responsive and lots of fun to helm. Their only issue was the amount of spray that was allowed to come back aft.
