DOMETIC CFX3
One of the great luxuries aboard a small boat is chilled food and drink. And if you don’t have a fridge then a carry-on cooler is a popular substitute. Of course at one extreme you can settle for an insulated chest, chuck a load of ice in and pick your food out of the melt water. But at the other extreme there is this, the latest portable cooler from Dometic. It’s the new generation of the CFX3 model and it comes with some useful features including a better user interface, an easy-to-open latch, better grip, improved LED lights, and solid anchors to secure the unit in vehicles. But of particular interest is Dometic’s most recent version of its proprietary Variable Motor Speed Optimisation ‘VMSO3’, which Dometic says makes the CFX3 one of the most energy-efficient powered coolers in the world. The CFX3 achieves energy class A++ (CFX3 35-55), which means a longer usage time and flexibility of power source. It even comes fitted with USB ports so that you can charge your phone from it, handy for running the Dometic app that will keep you informed of temperature and energy efficiency and receive alerts via wifi when the temperature deviates from the set level by the user. But we think the best new feature has to be its single-zone cooler, which has an independently refrigerated icemaker inside with ice-trays that can make ice for cold drinks, while running the main compartment as a fridge.
